Tuckworth-Lewis

A second attempt for a curtain raiser for the Under 12's with a visit to Bingham. Leggy had some good news and bad news on the arrival. The good news: it hadn't rained all day in Bingham. The bad news: mis-communication meant the opposition were an Under 13 team with County players!

I've seen the first team warm up and this is more than they do!

Harry Normington was on official school business so Ben Healey deputised as captain, as Bingham took the field to bat. Zachary Tudor (8-0) and Isaac Brown (5-0) showed good line and length in their opening two overs with the home side 14-0 off 4 overs.

An outstanding piece of fielding by Dominic Steiner, a direct hit from deep backward point, left the non-striker stranded, amidst wild celebrations. A feat that was repeated in the next over, but this time the new bat in by a whisker. This was met with a nod of approval from President Baker who was circumnavigating the boundary.

The other Bingham opener hit full cylinders but the ground fielding and backing up remained excellent. Harry Stolworthy made the breakthrough in the 10th over, Joe Neece, safe as houses under a steepler. The opener retired after a super knock of 27, closely followed by the County number 5.

Stolworthy struck in his second over, this time a thick edge finding the bucket like hands of Tom Newell. Newell was then in the mix with the ball forcing a lofted straight drive down Stolworthy's throat. Healey faced the the full force of the the lower order but responded sharply, finishing off an excellent run out after great work by Stolworthy again.

Some big hitting at the end of the innings left Bingham on 139-5 off 18 overs.

Tudor and Healey opened up solidly before a double stumping saw Tudor then Jack Cairns back in the hutch, leaving the imposing figure of Mackenzie Shepherd coming to the crease.

Some lusty blows and excellent running warmed the plentiful away support as Tuckwell was kept busy with the scorebook. An excellent 29 partnership was finally ended in the 7th over with Healey caught. Despite the best efforts of the away team signalling with vigour, Shepherd's fell inches short of the first 6. Neece edged one to slips with Shepherd finally departing in the 9th over, caught and bowled for 18.

The Bingham quicks were brought on in the fading light?!? Steiner hit some tasty blows and ran hard between the wickets with Peter Hennessy to advance the score before both being caught out. Josh Coulthard was left to hit the shot of the day, whipping the County 5 off his hips for a delectable 4, and not even running for it, nonchalant, like it, good lad!

With the home total unattainable the Tuckworth-Lewis method was quickly brought in to calculate the score required for a morale victory! Brown and Greg Mills needed 3 off the last 8 deliveries to reach the magic 70 mark and did so with 2 balls to spare amongst jubilant scenes! and 70 for 9.

Vice Captain Isaac Brown guides Keyworth home under the Tuckworth-Lewis method...

A terrific run out left Tuckwell and Legge eager for more and impressed with what they had seen. A super team effort with smiles all the way. Well done. Fingers crossed for dry weather on Thursday at Holme Pierrepont.

United: (L to R) Peter Hennessy, (Leggy) Joe Neece, Harry Stolworthy, Greg Mills and Zachary Tudor.

Disappointed... Yet Undefeated!

The GMTV forecasters predicted the daily band of rain sweeping in from the West to have disappeared by the late afternoon, leaving clear skies over Burton Joyce. Mr Tuckwell dismissed sceptical calls and texts in adamant optimism that Keyworth U12's first competitive fixture would be ON!

An apocalyptic sky over Keyworth, at 5pm, signalled the final nail in the coffin as the Met Office issued a similar warning over Burton Joyce, much to the huge disappointment of the travelling faithful, eager kids and coaches.

Still the show must go on, with Bingham on Tuesday the next attempt. And as Mr Newell pointed out, with every cloud... We're still undefeated!

Kimberley Leave Stiffs Bitter

What could go wrong went wrong as the Stiffs went down by 24 runs at home to Kimberley.

Dimps was soon scouring his new umpires rule book as the opposition had just two players present at the 1.30 start.

Ted won the toss and sportingly waited for the visitors to arrive and hoped the new ball would zip around, but this was a pitch more often seen in August than April after a week of fine weather.

A fine crowd had gathered, the Hiller Sisters had spent the morning revising with their heads in law books, to see if we would be in hot water after mid week revelations that Iggy would be 'grooming' Tinno for the season.

Cowlard and Tinno bowled without luck as edges went everywhere but to hand. Scooby back on home soil was soon in on the act. Drurs revealed he'd backed Scooby as first wicket taker, and next ball Tony got a plum LBW! Another wicket next over with a clean bowled put us on top at 50-2 after 20 overs.

Then a grim hour. First Ernie and Matt in the close catching positions did a passable audition for the all new Billy Smart's Circus juggling not one but two chances off Scooby before the no.4 had reached double figures. Then Tinno chased after a half drive and threw in a routine return only for his shoulder to pop out and sadly spent the rest of the afternoon in A&E, season over before it had hardly started. Such has been the progression of the Youth Policy, that young Isaac Brown stepped in as substitute fielder to make his KCC debut for the adults rather than the under 12s!

Leggy was bowling with deceptive pace up the hill, if anything slower than he looked. After six fruitless overs the Boss finally picked up a clean bowled only for Father Ted to whip him out of the attack. Ted was obviously sniffing a few cheap victims but was soon teaching the young Kimberley batters some industrial phrases after disappearing for 31 off 2 overs.

Delighted to be given three innings in one day, Kimberley's no.4 struck the ball cleanly to reach a fine 100. Liam chipped in with a couple of late wickets, Ted taking a fine tumbling catch, to see the away side pegged back to 215-6 at tea. Scooby was the pick of the bowlers with 3-39.

Jean had served up the usual banquet for tea; cornet shaped wraps followed by pickled onions the highlights.

In reply Scooby was quick out of the blocks with a rapid 23 but wickets tumbled too readily; Ted made 9, Ben unluckily caught off a blinding cut shot for a duck, Top Man for 1, Ernie for 9 and Liam for 2. At 80-6 this was another fine mess.

Fortunately Cowlard was in blinding form and had Drurs nagging him after every ball to play straight. And play straight he did racing to 50 and starting to dream that an unlikely win might be on the cards. With his own shoulder injury after bench pressing two bags of sugar in the gym, Drurs struggled even more than usual to get the ball of the square, but supported AC in a stand of 84.

With the rate up to 8 Drurs holed out limply to mid on for 24. Leggy had used up all his luck keeping out the under 12's in early morning nets and went quickly for a duck.

Young Chris Soar showed his older team mates how to value your wicket and kept Cowlard company for the last 5 overs.

With an over to go the run chase was in vain but Cowlard needed 9 for his maiden hundred. Young Chris scrambled a single to let AC smash a boundary, but then mis-timed a drive to leave him needing a six hit off the last ball. Sadly Andy could only manage a four to leave Barry with another archive entry for the nervous nineties.

Addition in the scorebook though was about as accurate as a Zimbabwean general election, and after a second recount, Cowlard had been found the elusive single to take him to 100 not out. as we finished on 191-8.

A bright spot on a frustrating day.

Kids for a Quid

The Boss, wading his way through his 7th pint of Kingfisher, announced in bullish fashion at the KCC Curry night, that he would be padding up in the morning, at the final Junior net session at Trent Bridge.

On each stump was to be placed a shiny gold pound coin, which would be replaced every time the timber was sent tumbling, with the victor pocketing the cash. The assembled, fearing the worst, decided on an S.O.S mercy whip round to prevent Coach being out of pocket. The Boss laughed in the face of such mocking and settled into Kingfisher number 8.

The boys watched in admiration / amazement / surprise / glee (delete as applicable) as a remarkably fresh looking Leggy took his guard.

With 20 minutes allotted to 'fill ones boots', the Boss displayed the finer points of the forward defensive, despite being caught fishing a couple of times off Stolworthy. After proving so resolute, a clamour for some left handed batting produced the same result.

The Winner!

The Future's Bright

The lads in KCC's Junior Squad had their official signing-on event before practice on Thursday night.

Mr Tuckwell gave a stirring speech on the importance of playing hard but with good manners before handing out club playing shirts to the First Team squad of the future.

10 Week Transformation

The Keyworth Junior Section has had a remarkable 10 weeks. Having just completed the 11th of 12 Saturday morning net sessions, at Trent Bridge, the improvement has been impressive, much to the delight of Leggy and Tuckers. The pace and accuracy of the bowling has increased dramatically as with the power and shot selection of the batting.

Since the clocks sprung forward no time has been wasted. The Field of Dreams has hosted double weekly practice sessions. The Sherriff, Cliff and the President, Mr Barry Baker, have all helped impart the finer points of fielding, match simulation and fetching your own...

The fixture list is 99% complete and can be found in the adjacent column under:

'2009 Junior Fixtures'.

A flurry of friendlies - 4 in the opening 9 days, including the first of 3 head to heads against neighbours Plumtree, ensure the boys hit the ground running. The first league match of the season is on Thursday 7th of May at the Rec against Caythorpe, followed by another home tie a week later against Kimberley.

I have every faith that the boys will put Keyworth back on the map, in regards to Junior Cricket, as we attempt to turn the heads of the established order and show that there are some new kids in town!

Game On.
