Your Timing's Out...

Just one game at the Bingham 6 aside for the Under 11s this week, so an early finish and back for the Cup Final... Or turn up at 1.50 to find you are last game on at 3.50... Still, 5 lads, and an indoor practice area for plenty of tip and run or smash it as hard as you can.

Wollaton were the opponents for Rock, Blacklock, Devenney, Cox and Phoenix. Rock lost the toss as Keyworth were inserted. Devenney and Cox were hoping for better fortunes than the 2 weeks previous, and were forced to play straight for the opening 3 overs. 21-0.

With Tuckwell eyeing a sizeable total, and plenty of strokemakers to come, the openers cut loose. Devenney hit a tasty maximum and smart running saw the scoreboard accelerate.

Devenney (26*) retired with 2 overs to go which brought the scampering Blacklock to the crease. A couple of 'Carry on Keyworth' moments were insignificant comapred to some fine stroke making. Cox (24*) and Blacklock (9*) saw KCC through to a defendable 75-0 off 7.

The Wollaton openers set about the response and were on top in the opening exchanges, despite a smart run out by Cox of the bowling of Blacklock. Cox provided another stumping in the 3rd over after quick work by Rock.

Phoenix bowled an excellent over, and despite seeing the ball hit back past him, reacted quickest to whip the bails off. The batsman thought a boundary had been registered, however it had hit the side wall before reaching the back and the ball remained live, as the Wollaton 3 and 4 were having a chat halfway down the track.

A series of stumping opportunities were squandered but Blacklock caught easily off the penultimate over of Devenney.

Blacklock was handed the final over with 9 required. 3 of the first delivery was followed by 2 dots and another 3. 4 off 2. The penultimate delivery caught the edge of the carpet and whistled past the despairing dive of Cox behind the stumps, as Wollaton achieved the target with a ball to spare.

Still, great credit to the boys and spectators for the extended afternoon entertainment!

2 tough ones to finish. Next week, 7th March, 2.20pm (definitely) against Notts and Arnold. 21st against Radcliffe.

Arthur Wood

We are sorry to learn of the passing of Arthur who played for the club between 1950 and 1961 and had been a Vice President since 1974.

He is fondly remembered and had still been a loyal supporter, watching home matches in recent years.

Our sympathies go to his daughter Jane and his sisters Ellen and Jocelyn (widow of another former player Gerald Starbuck) and other family members and friends.

Willow Brook and Friends

A third Bingham outing for the Under 11s proved interesting to say the least. Half term holidays, cubs rock climbing, Valentines and poor organisation left Tuckwell with 2 of the the full compliment of 6 with 24 hours to go. Sound familiar...

A sterling recruiting effort, with the aid of the Willow Brook phone directory, saw Devenney, Cox, Burns and Miss Brazil (maybe a first in the 195 year history Barry?) joined by Boyle and Linley.

Bingham Stars and Plumtree were the opposition for the afternoon, with Bingham up first. Burns won the toss as KCC opted to bat, with the two mainstays, Devenney and Cox, opening. The latter recieved a golden and was shortly followed by Linley. 7-2 off 2 looked ominous. Boyle departed for 5 before Devenney and Burns pushed the score into the 40's with 2 overs to play.

Devenney (15) was run out as Brazil strode to the crease, with instructions to take her time and get her eye in - before launching a straight six, first ball back over the bowlers head! More big hitting and good running saw Burns (16*) and Brazil (12*) see KCC through to 69-4 off 7.

Devenney opened with an unplayable leg breaking over, except one that was smashed towards the back boundary wall , unfortunately for the batsman straight at the ankles of Brazil who took a superb catch. The following over Devenney produced a smart run out, off the bowling of Boyle. 6-2 off 2. Brazil, Linley and Boyle all delivered good overs with 25 required off the penultimate 2.

Burns took the ball as the lower order hit out impressively but unfortunately for Bingham the 5th delivery was smashed straight at Brazil who took another excellent palm stinger. Devenney finished with another tight over as Bingham concluded on 52-3, handing a Keyworth a 17 run victory, with Tuckwell ecstatic!

Second up were Plumtree who served up a master class, amassing 107-0 in their 7 overs with the first 3 batsman each retiring having reached 25. The pacy and accurate Plumtree bowling never let up as Keyworth were dismissed for 34 with Devenney (7) top scoring.

A tremendous afternoon in the face of adversity, with a well deserved victory against Bingham through an excellent team performance typifying the KCC spirit!

KCC Champions in 1922

Barry Baker, our Club Statistician, has unearthed more gems from the archives at the City Library .........

KEYWORTH the first SOUTH NOTTS CHAMPIONS, in 1922.

I have discovered from looking through the Nottingham Daily Guardian at the City Library that a South Notts League was competed for in 1922. Sadly the league ran into financial and organisational problems, was not completed and not repeated in the 1923 season.

However the last league table published on 21st August 1922 shows that Keyworth completed their games and their points total could not have been overtaken by any of the other clubs. In fact, they won with an unbeaten record, the only match they failed to win was against closest rivals Cotgrave CC when the match was abandoned due to rain.

1. KEYWORTH P 12 W 11 D 1 L 0 Pts 23
2. COTGRAVE P 10 W 7 D 1 L 2 Pts 15

Prominent players in the team were the brothers Thomas and Jack Armstrong, Harry Bolton, Ernest Davill, all bowlers who were more than useful with the bat and Edgar Pike an opening bat and wicket keeper. Davill had inherited the farm where the team played their home matches on Bunny Lane in 1920 following the death of his father William. Jack Armstrong had just completed his last season as a wing half for Nottingham Forest FC having signed for them back in 1905 and making a then record 461 appearances, many of them as captain.

Thomas Armstrong and Bolton were regularly selected to play for Notts Colts and Notts Club & Ground selections, made up of the best amateur players in the County and Pike, the great grandfather of current player Stuart Meek had been playing for the club since 1899.
